Viva Las Vegas!
Last week I was there. In Las Vegas. With two colleagues. We were attending Perry Belcher’s Weirdest Event Ever 3. The event was outstanding and I’m not exaggerating.
Perry brings in experts and gives them hours on stage. That’s right - hours. I didn’t see 16 speakers in one day for 30 minutes each. Oh no. I got to see and hear a speaker go deep into their topic. So deep it was a masterclass for each of the 5 topics. Too deep in some instances because the sheer amount of information and details sometimes felt like a fire hose…but I’m not complaining. Thank goodness for video I can look at later!
What was this event about? Traffic. Getting quality traffic from sources other than Facebook. Sources like:
YouTube - did you know you can create a video ad? (I can hear you now saying Duh!) yeah, well, did you think to put that video ad on a competitor’s video?
Pinterest - did you know it’s an image search engine that wants to send traffic off the platform?
Google Performance Max - aka PMax will be the only ad service on Google in about 3 years. Select your keywords and then your target audience and then…machine learning and AI take over for the next 6 weeks or so. Then you’ll see the ads Google created and placed in front of your target market - where they are now. Ads are created based on the entire search history of an individual.
Instagram - growth hack is to use 3 to 5 hashtags per post and start off with big hashtags that have a million posts. Then, rotate your hashtags throughout the month to see which ones perform the best.
Programmatic advertising - for those with big ad budgets that want to expand their reach. Did you know Yahoo is a closed system? Everything in the Yahoo! network is read by Yahoo! algos (yes this includes your emails) and each data point is used to determine the best place for your ad.
Omnipresent retargeting machine - YouTube ads and then with a pixel you can retarget in a wonderfully fabulous way that ensures you will not be forgotten.
Honestly, I’ll be using two of the techniques over the next couple of months. One day soon I’ll dive into Google PMax because it is powerful. I encourage you to check out each of them on your own. I know, without the details of a masterclass you’ll be handicapped…so why not make plans to attend the next event? I’ll let you know when it happens.
Oh yeah, a delightful addition to the above is this respiratory thing I caught while there. I flew in Saturday and on the last day…Tuesday…I woke up feeling like I’d been hit by a Mack truck. So I slept all day. Flew home Wednesday. Been a wet noodle since. Better than being sick in Vegas, it still stinks :(

Marketing Tip
Don’t use a color background behind any copy area. (Except for yellow behind black, which can make copy more readable.)
A background in any other color diminishes readership. Use background colors only for things for which you don't want people to read … like some obscure regulation you may need to include in your offer.
This applies to print, PDF, website pages. Make sure the copy is easy to read with the best contrast so don’t try to be cute or creative with black or white text on a read background … or white text on a black background … or green text on a blue background. You’ll discourage your prospect from reading.

aka random bits of info you may or may not be able to use in your life
The name Las Vegas was given to the city in 1829 by Rafael Rivera, a member of the Spanish explorer Antonio Armijo trading party that was traveling to Los Angeles, and stopped for water there on the Old Spanish Trail from New Mexico. At that time, several parts of the valley contained artesian wells surrounded by extensive green areas; Las Vegas means "the meadows" in Spanish. The flows from the wells fed the Las Vegas Wash, which runs to the Colorado River. Wikipedia
